Yet her new life is shattered when Luke, recently released from prison, shows up on her doorstep, demanding to get back together. When it becomes clear to Luke that she is no longer interested in him, and she has in fact moved on with a new boyfriend, he vows to kill her. Now, it seems, Charlotte only has one option Run.
Neighbors - New York is a city of eight million strangers. For twenty-five-year old Buddy Smith, who values his privacy, it's the only place he would call home. Author Jeremy Bates explores the boundaries of the horror genre with these four novellas (all of which are available separately on Amazon). The stories, which run about 100 pages each, have little in common other than the quality of their writing and Bates's willingness to play games with traditional horror/suspense conventions in order to keep readers constantly guessing and entertained.BLACK CANYON (4 Stars): A sixth-grade boy goes with his parents on an off-season camping trip to the Black Canyon, a spectacular but little used national park in Colorado. Despite a lack of outdoor skills, the father insists on hiking down to the bottom, and, on the way, a predictable accident occurs, leaving father and son trapped at the bottom with little food or water. "Black Canyon" is as much of a character study as an outdoor adventure (although Bates does a good job in describing the perils of the wild), as the author builds suspense by showing how a dysfunctional family unravels under stress. The finale proves shocking in a most unexpected way, although Bates carefully foreshadows it during the earlier part of the book.
REWIND (5 Stars): Bates provides his take on the amnesiac mystery subgenre, as a man wakes up in a dingy apartment hooked up by electrodes to a mysterious machine and a dead body in the next room. He has ID in his wallet but no memory of who he is and spends the book trying to piece it together. The book is written in the first person, and Harry (the narrator) proves a good, witty detective and an insightful judge of character. The solution is far fetched but makes sense if you accept Bates's premise, and there's a terrific twist ending I doubt anyone will see coming.
RUN (4 Stars): This is the most straightforward and traditional story in the book, but it's a fast paced, suspenseful woman-in-peril story. A young woman on a camping trip is assaulted by her boyfriend, an ex-Afghan vet with PTSD issues. He goes to jail but when he gets out, he comes after her and her new boyfriend, pursuing them from state to state. There's a high body count and a good bit of genuine suspense leading up to the eventual showdown, even if it proves to be somewhat over-the-top.
NEIGHBORS (5 Stars): Bates plays a lot of games with story telling conventions here, as he reveals the ending (all but a brief, twist-filled epilogue) in the first three pages, then shows how the characters arrived there. The story features a disturbed young man named Buddy, who would like to be a suspense writer, and his encounters with his new neighbor, an attractive woman who was accused of killing her last boyfriend in another state. Bates does a good job of showing what's going on inside Buddy's head, and horror fans will recognize some of this story's influences, but Bates tweaks them and inserts some clever plot turns along the way to keep things interesting. Overall, it's the best story in the book.
Despite the dissimilar subject matter, all of the stories are well-written, suspenseful, and quite descriptive. In each story, readers are privy to the thought processes of one of the main characters, and some of those thought processes are quite warped. Fans of the supernatural won't find any demons or vampires here, but those who enjoy mystery and suspense will find a lot to like. This collection has the added advantage of offering readers a significant savings over the cost of buying each of the books separately. The collection as a whole easily rates five stars.

Brilliant! These stories were fantastic with a twist. Jeremy Bates is such a good writer! I've read most of his books now so can't wait to see what else he has in store. You will not be disappointed in anything you read from this author.
Mr. Bates is vastly becoming one of my favorite new authors. Each new story is unique, filled with interesting characters and fantastic twists that will leave you guessing till the end. Can't say which was my favorite short, each had their own flavor. I enjoyed them all!
I don't usually like short story collections but LOVED all four of these. Some were more novellas and all were excellent! Really creepy and enjoyable. Look forward to reading more by this author
I like to read short stories and I wasn't disappointed. I know everyone says, I didn't see that coming, but in these stories that was true.
Dark Hearts is a fabulous collection of short thriller stories that you will love adding to your collection. The characters are well detailed and even easy to relate to at times, but their crimes are evil and twisted! Just when you think you know where a story is headed it takes a sharp turn and leaves you surprised. Bravo again for Mr. Bates! What a talented author in the horror thriller & mystery genres!
I read for enjoyment. I was thoroughly entertained. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.
This was another great book I just finished by him. Four different stories four surprising twist and turns. I am not going to say anything like a spoiler alert. But I highly recommend it. The one that got me the most was run. I had anxiety and I mean that in a really good way. Anyhow read it you'll love it!
